  • Overview

    As a leader in the department, the Director of Laboratory R&D will be responsible for driving all research and development activities, including new assay development, troubleshooting of current assays, external collaborations, conduct discovery research and new technology evaluations. The Director of R&D will provide operational advice, technical support and professional and scientific expertise to the clinical laboratory programs. Additionally, he/she will represent the department and provide operational guidance, technical support, and professional and scientific expertise to internal and external working groups and committees concerning corporate strategic directives and goals. This position will report to the Executive Director of Laboratory Operations.


    • Develop and drive execution of a R&D strategy in alignment with departmental and corporate goals. Drive the development and introduction of new services.
    • Lead a molecular assay development project and team in a hands-on manner through pre-development, development, verification, validation and pre-launch activities.
    • Achieve assay, reagent, and controls performance metrics while maintaining Quality Management Systems compliance of project documentation and processes
    • Effectively plan, resource and achieve milestones and timelines
    • Provide leadership in the assay development process to ensure project deliverables are achieved and results are high quality
    • Oversees and coordinates product/project teams from conception through development cycle. 
    • Implements and communicates the strategic and technical direction for the product/project team. 
    • Identifies customer needs for specific projects and programs and manages their development and execution. 
    • Works closely with corporate development to develop overall launch plan for new products. 
    • Prepares strategic pre-launch and pre-marketing plans and provides input into development of long- and short-term marketing strategies. 
    • Provide technical leadership in assay and reagent QC methods and process development
    • Coach and support team members to ensure best practice in the execution of product development projects
    • Oversee remedial action and troubleshooting to support clinical testing, QC and technical support as needed
    • Pro-actively improve efficiency, quality, and effectiveness of research and development efforts
    • Introduce a culture of continuous improvement to integrate the group, streamline processes and reduce time to market for new products.
    • Provide technical assistance to all laboratory departments.
    • Provide professional scientific support to senior management.
    • Prepare and deliver presentations on lab-related topics.
    • Work with other Business Units to publish studies in peer-review journals. Prepare and/or edit technical and reference publications.
    • Support adherence to all policies, procedures and SOP's within the Laboratory.
    • Responsible for personnel management activities such as: scheduling, personnel actions (hiring, promotions, transfers, etc.), training and development, providing regular direction and feedback on performance, disciplinary actions and preparing and delivering annual performance and salary reviews.
    • Develop short- and long-range objectives, organizational structure, staffing requirements and succession plans For R&D team.
    • Integrate activities with those of other major organizational units (e.g. segments, departments, functions).
    • Develop and recommend departmental budget and authorize expenditures.
    • Develop and oversee the implementation of departmental training programs, including orientation.
    • Support the policy of equal employment opportunity through affirmative action in personnel actions.
    • Ensure adherence to pertinent regulatory requirements and to departmental policies, practices and procedures [SOPs, safety procedures and biosafety protocols].
    • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
    • Lead and assist in development, optimization and validation of new diagnostic methods for transfer to Clinical Laboratory departments
    • Proficiency in utilizing and developing bio analytical techniques such as ELISAs, PCR assays, qPCR, sequencing, NGS
    • Prepare clear, detailed experimental reports that enable reproduction of experiment by others in the lab and include precise tracking of samples and data
    • Develop, write, edit and review protocols, method validation studies, equipment qualifications and technical documents
    • May prepare scientific posters and manuscripts developed from ongoing research
    • Evaluate new techniques, technologies and instruments
    • Maintain equipment, document maintenance and validation in a GMP environment
    • This is a key leadership role within the Laboratory Operations R&D group and is responsible conducting discovery research and for the development and release of new clinical assays.


    • PhD. in a Physical or Life Sciences discipline
    • Minimum of 5 years of relevant clinical and IVD industry experience in assay development.
    • Experience in pharmacogenomics is preferred.
    • Demonstrated technical, managerial, and leadership expertise in assay development
    • Development experience in CLIA/CAP-approved products a plus
    • A strong work ethic and ability to generate high quality work under tight deadlines

    • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
